Gabriel Westphal was born in 1989 into a family of artists. He grew up in the magical world of Le Cirque du Grand Céleste, that his parents had created. It was within this company that he took his first steps as a performer. He showed an early interest in music and particularly for a drum-kit made of pots and pans before moving on to lessons with a real instrument at the age of 4. He went on to study at the Conservatory of Mantes la Jolie where he won the Contemporary Music Prize. He later joined the Didier Lockwood Music Centre, a jazz and improvisation school, from which he graduated top of his class.

As an artisan of sound in its many different forms (both a live and studio drummer, but equally skilled in multiple instruments, a composer, an arranger and a sound engineer), Gabriel Westphal draws on his creativity and his versatility to best serve the musical project he is working on. Capable of playing multiple instruments (drums, acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin, bass, double-bass, piano, accordion, glockenspiel…) his curiosity and his culture of the “material” of sound are drivers in his search for singularity. He is particularly fond of old drums chosen for their particular grain, but he also draws his inspiration from an “instrumentarium” of one-of-a-kind objects that he has picked up along his way and uses in his different productions.
