“A creative artist full of energy and brimming with projects of extremely high quality!” Paris Move

Gabriel Westphal was born in 1989 into a family of artists. He grew up in the magical world of Le Cirque du Grand Céleste, that his parents had created. It was within this company that he took his first steps as a performer. He showed an early interest in music and particularly for a drum-kit made of pots and pans before moving on to lessons with a real instrument at the age of 4. He went on to study at the Conservatory of Mantes la Jolie where he won the Contemporary Music Prize. He later joined the Didier Lockwood Music Centre, a jazz and improvisation school, from which he graduated top of his class.

As an artisan of sound in its many different forms (both a live and studio drummer, but equally skilled in multiple instruments, a composer, an arranger and a sound engineer), Gabriel Westphal draws on his creativity and his versatility to best serve the musical project he is working on. Capable of playing multiple instruments (drums, acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin, bass, double-bass, piano, accordion, glockenspiel…) his curiosity and his culture of the “material” of sound are drivers in his search for singularity. He is particularly fond of old drums chosen for their particular grain, but he also draws his inspiration from an “instrumentarium” of one-of-a-kind objects that he has picked up along his way and uses in his different productions.

He has been fortunate enough to work with artists on a very diverse range of projects: All Mice, Antoine Laudière Trio, Bal Jacquin, Boa Brass Band, Compagnie du Grand Hôtel, Compagnie l’Indécente, Cynthia Abraham, le Cirque dans les Etoiles, David Linx, Ellinoa, Fixi & Winston Mc Anuff, Fixi & Ultrabal (Zaza Fournier, Maïa Barouh, Chloé Lacan, Gatica, Johnny Montreuil), Happy Devils, La Fée du Bal, Les Yeux d’la Tête, Little Basie, Lutherie Urbaine, Magic Malik, Matthis Pascaud, Maria Popkiewicz, Maxima Poesia, Mentor Mentor, Moley and the Crooks, Neuvième Production, OFMA, Red Chocolate Trio, Robine Klein, Wanderlust Orchestra, Zlabya

Here you will find a non-exhaustive list of projects I have been fortunate enough to work on, either as a musician, a director or a sound engineer (recording and mixing).

Here you will find a non-exhaustive list of projects that I worked on in the role of composer. The work presented here ranges from composition/performance of soundtracks for live shows and music-to-image pieces (music and soundscapes) to animation of musical automatons.
